The United Nations General Assembly declared November 2nd as the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists in December 2013. The date was chosen to commemorate the killing of two French journalists, Claude Verlon and Ghislaine Dupont, in Mali on November 2, 2013. Over 1,200 journalists were slain between 2006 and 2020 for reporting the news and informing the people. According to the UNESCO Observatory of Killed Journalists, the killers go unpunished in nine out of ten cases. Impunity leads to more killings and is usually a sign of escalating conflict and a breakdown of the legal and judicial systems. Based on the UNESCO report, I created these designs for the Sri Lanka Press Institute.
